1920s fancy dress costume ideas

• Dress in a flapper costume - bob haircut, or wavy short/curly hair, head band with a feather in it, long doubled up pearl (or similar) necklace or feather boa, long silk gloves, stockings, cigarette in cigarette holder. Dresses were straight without waists, hem length was on or just above the knee. The shimmy-dress had tassles all the way down to accentuate the shimmy movement. The flat-chest look was in (women wanted to look like 15 year olds) - so don't accentuate the bust line.
• Men - go as a disgruntled/depressed stock broker (there was a huge stock market crash in 1929, referred to Black Thursday)
• Louis Armstrong - famous singer and trumpeter "Satchmo", light suit with bow tie, trumpet.
• Coco Chanel - or her famous Chanel suit which was launched in the 20s
• Charles Lindberg - famous American pilot who crossed the Atlantic, non-stop, in his plane The Spirit of St Louis.
• Women were first allowed to vote in 1929 in the US. Perhaps go as a suffragette.
• Mickey Mouse (was invented in this era).
• A Miss America  - the first contest was held in the 1920s. Miss Washington DC was the winner.
• Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered in 1929 - go dressed as him or as an archaeologist.
